Pirate fishing exposed in Sierra Leone

Upwell is a great source for breaking news on the overfishing and marine conservation front, thanks to Rachel for this piece above. EU-backed trawlers have destroyed healthy fishing grounds off the west African coast for decades, so it’s positive that environmental campaigners have helped to publicise the wrongdoers and help support action against them.

Interesting also that Somalian piracy helped to keep some of the megatrawlers away from that coastline and boost catches of local artisanal fishers – an extreme tactic but reports suggested some pirates were former fisherman who turned to robbing westerners to support their families.
